22 companies including Nokia, Samsung, Sony Mobile and Broadcom have teamed up to create the In-Location Alliance.
Nokia has announced “In-Location” an alliance of 22 companies with the goal to drive innovation and market adoption of high accuracy indoor positioning and related services. Finding out where you are in a mall or a sports arena using a smartphone is difficult today because GPS coverage usually isn’t available. The new partners explain that there are many possibilities for this indoors version of GPS that include better navigation, personalized product promotions, accurate location of assets and better customer recognition on behalf of stores. The primary solutions in development seem to rely on Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi. While the group plans to work together to develop solutions, neither Apple nor Google, which both have a strong interest in location services, has signed up.
