Billy Crystal returns to replaces Eddie Murphy as Oscars host.

Billy Crystal has agreed to host the 2012 Academy Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed that the veteran, much beloved comedian would host again next year. Funnyman has hosted the Hollywood telecast eight times previously. He has replaced Eddie Murphy, who withdrew from the job on Wednesday after the departure the previous day of producer and friend Brett Ratner, who left amid criticism of his use of a pejorative term for gay men at a screening of the director’s action comedy Tower Heist, which stars Murphy and Ben Stiller. The comedian has been among Oscar watchers’ favorite hosts over the years and it seems like every year when hosts disappoint here have been calls for Crystal to return.
