Oracle and Google are set to face each other in court in San Francisco on Monday.
Oracle and Google are face off in court today for the start of an eight-week jury trial that could have significant implications for developers of Android applications, as well as potentially for developers of other software. Oracle sued Google in August 2010 over seven patents and copyright claims for the Java programming language, which Oracle acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems. Both sides agree that the Java programming language is not covered by copyright and that developers can use it freely without a licence. But one point they disagree on is whether Google needed a licence for the Java APIs used to implement the language. The trial will be divided into three phases: copyright liability, patent claims and damages.
