The names of the dead, from all classes on the doomed liner, are engraved on five bronze plaques.
The new Titanic Memorial Plaque was opened during the service at Belfast City Hall, Northern Ireland, Sunday. This month marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship and the tragic fate of that “practically unsinkable” steamship. The story of the world’s most famous maritime disaster has gripped the world’s imagination, inspiring Hollywood films. After the wreath-laying a minute’s silence was held for private reflection then the hymn Nearer My God to Thee, which was played by the band before the ship sank, rang out. On Saturday, a commemoration at Belfast’s Waterfront hall brought together stars from music and film. The Titanic memorial service was on board of MS Balmoral and about 50 of the 1,309 passengers take have a direct link with the doomed liner.
