Ice hockey team died in Yaroslavl air crash.
On Wednesday afternoon, 7 September 2011 at 16:05 local time, an aircraft carrying Lokomotiv to its opening game in Minsk crashed shortly after take off from Yaroslavl’s Tunoshna airport. Ice hockey team was on its way to Minsk, Belarus, in order to start the 2011–12 season, scheduled for Thursday night. All players from the main roster plus four from the farm team were on board the aircraft. Seven crew and 36 members of the team and coaching staff died. Among them were players from Germany, Sweden and Slovakia. Doctors were fighting to save the life of crew member Alexander Sizov and Alexander Galimov, who survived from the crash. Due to the organization and staging of memorial events in honor of the victims of the tragedy, the Kontinental Hockey League championship 2011/2012 season will now begin on the 12th of September.
