NCSoft, a South Korean company, has officially announced the development of a sequel to the popular MMORPG series Guild Wars. CEO Park Byung-moo confirmed during a shareholders’ meeting that NCSoft’s subsidiary, ArenaNet, is currently working on Guild Wars 3.
ArenaNet’s dedication to the Guild Wars series is evident as they immediately began work on the third installment after the release of the second. The original Guild Wars made its debut in 2005, followed by the second part in 2012.
Since 2019, the anticipation for Guild Wars 3 has been steadily building among fans. This was sparked by online reports hinting at ArenaNet’s plans to develop a sequel to the beloved Guild Wars series.
The most recent expansion for Guild Wars 2, “Secrets of the Obscure,” was released in 2023. Two additional expansions for the game are scheduled for release in 2024 and 2025.
Moo’s statements regarding Guild Wars 3 have raised concerns among fans of the series, who are questioning how long ArenaNet will continue to support Guild Wars 2. Specifically, they are curious whether the developer will continue to release regular updates for the game after the launch of the third installment in the franchise.
Kotaku acknowledges that Guild Wars 2 has maintained longevity due to its dedicated community. The publication suggests that some users might interpret the announcement of Guild Wars 3 as a precursor to the eventual discontinuation of Guild Wars 2. However, Kotaku believes that the release of Guild Wars 3 is unlikely to happen in the near future.
