Google and Facebook announce new ad formats.
The ad unit will be announced this week at Advertising Week in New York. A new type of ad that will expand if a friend “liked” the brand and ad will allow comments to be posted alongside comments posted by other users. When users click on the new ads, they’ll display multiple pictures and large type. The ad unit is based on the idea that ads with recommendations from friends will be more effective than standard display ads and magnify a brand’s reach. Unlike Sponsored Stories, which only shows a friend’s interaction with the brand, the expandable ads will contain an advertiser message and won’t appear in a user’s News Feed.
