The Art Newspaper has announced its annual report on attendance at museums and temporary exhibitions.
The most popular temporary exhibitions of the last year was “The Magical World of Escher” with 9.677 presences per day at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, in Rio de Janiero. In second place is “Kukai’s World: The Arts of Esoteric Buddhism” at the Tokyo National Museum, with a daily average of 9,108. At the third place is “Landscape Reunited” at the National Palace Museum in Taipei with a daily average of 8,828.
The Louvre in Paris was the most visited art museum last year. The Louvre increase its annual attendance by 400,000 to nearly 8.9 million, maintaining its top position, while the Centre Pompidou also saw a massive increase from 3.1 million to 3.6 million. UK’s national museums London’s British Museum (5.8m), National Gallery (5.3m) and the Tate Modern (4.8m) are in the world’s top ten. Around 2.9 million people enjoyed the Spanish national collection at The Museo del Prado, Madrid.
In the US, Alexander McQueen,s “Savage Beauty” at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art made the grade with more than 8,000 people a day, and around 660,000 in total.
